How we help
Individual Therapy
In our practice we understand that current symptoms may reflect early patterns of survival that were necessary in the face of difficult life experiences.
People often come to therapy when they feel stuck in their patterns and wish to discover new ways of forming healthy relationships and managing emotions. Often this involves some processing and letting go of past hurts and losses while moving toward positive change. At other times, clients are faced with acute life stressors or crises and need someone to help navigate through these challenges.
At West London Psychology we will work together to develop a therapy plan that matches your individual needs and goals. In your therapy we will work with you to understand how your emotions, thoughts, and behaviours are related to one another and the concerns that you bring to treatment. Your psychologist will help you build insight, develop new patterns, and create a life worth living. As psychologists, we have our own styles in therapy which reflect our training and backgrounds, but we all use approaches that are research based and effective.
Child / Adolescent Therapy
Therapy for children and adolescents is tailored to the needs and circumstances of each client and family’s unique circumstances.
We use relationship-based, evidence informed therapeutic approaches to support children and adolescents to learn to understand and cope with difficult experiences, thoughts and feelings. We support our young clients to develop healthy skills and strategies to face difficulties with self-compassion, hope, and confidence. We believe that children and youth are resilient and will “do well if they can.” We aim to help them develop abilities and strengths that they can bring forward to new challenges throughout life.
Therapy with younger children may focus more on art and play based strategies whereas older children and adolescents may benefit from a combination of semi-structured activities and developmentally appropriate “talk therapy” aimed at building insight and skills. Therapy with children and adolescents may involve variable levels of parent/caregiver participation depending on needs and circumstances.
Parent Consultation
Parent consultation is a way to support parents and caregivers to better understand and improve their relationships with their children, adolescents and young-adult children.
This may include a focus on attachment relationships, developmental issues, emotion coaching, and behavioural support. Life circumstances such as traumas, moves, losses, illness separation/divorce, and blending families can add stress to any family. Some children also have mental health or developmental challenges that require unique parenting approaches. In our practice, we aim to provide a safe, empathic, and understanding environment to help parents/caregivers make sense of challenges they are experiencing and then identify steps they can take towards supporting their child and their family.
Some of our therapists provide specific types of parent consultation, such as:
- Emotion-Focused Family Therapy
- Attachment/Relational Support
- Early Intervention (prenatal through toddler years)
- Behavioural Coaching
